What does the muscle loss have to do with low carbohydrates? If you are not doing some kind of resistance training such as lifting weights, would you not lose muscle just as much if you were on a low fat or high carb diet?

aha yeah... i learned the low carb lesson the hard way too, low carb diets = crap, you cant even get a decent pump when working out.. if you get a pump AT ALL

THAT...is absolutely NOT true!! I did Low Carb for 14 months....lost 45 lbs, at least 20 lbs of it muscle. Everyone on this board knows I'm a bodybuilder/powerlifter. I lost strength, stamina,..and muscle. DO NOT GO LOW CARB.

the people who lose muscle are the guys who dont lift weights or that consider 3 sets curls, 3 sets of pushdowns, 50 crunches, side laterals and 20 mins on eleiptical to be an incrdedilble workout. ..Heavy Squats, Deads, rows, bp, dips, standing mp, pull ups, core training, lunges, glute ham rasie, etc..do this and u will not muscle if your protein/fat is kept high...the ones who lose muscle starve themselvs or bb'ers who do a ton of cardio and lift lighter than they normally would..

couldnt agree more!!! its called ckd diet or anabolic diet and it works great!! first week is alil fuzzy tho. As long as you keep calories moderate, have a carb up every 5 days, lift heavy ass weights, comound lifts 3 days a wk but low volume and do no more than 3 but preferbaly 2 cardio sessions you will not lose muscle. i went frm 257 to 190 in 3 months. Bench from 175 up to 370 ( BP was not within 3months but all while doing low carb) n body fat went from over 30 to 13.. it works great

The effects of cortisol are WAY overblown.
brushfour (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
All the protein in the world will not minimize muscle loss on low carb. Lack of protein...or consuming additional protein will not save muscle on Low carb. 3-4 grams of protein per Kilogram of bodyweight is WAY more protein then what's needed. Bobybuilders do not do Low Carb. If they're on heavy amounts of steriods,....they many do " lower carb " in relation to their bodyweight. 200-250 grams of carbs per day....lower carb.
djole666 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
And, not every weigth training is equal for low carb. Workout should be based on Growth Hormone Inceraced output witch should overcome cortisol output.
djole666 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Yes, this is true but there is a correct and incorrect application of low carb diets.Low carb diets should contain 3.3-4 g of protein per kg of lean body mass to minimize the muscle loss (same you have with carbs)and one CARB UP day every 3-5 days. The workout at low carb differs a lot then on carb diets. Its very important to do NO CARDIO, NO HIIT - Just weight training !!
brushfour (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
NO...that is NOT low carb unless you're on a 1000 calorie or less per day diet...(which you should not be). Usually we underestimate how many carbs we're taking in. I'll bet your carb % is larger then 20%.
